SMB

Server Message Block, the base protoclol that underpins Windows File Sharing (now renamed to CIFS). Usually synonymous with Samba.

Resources:

  • Set Windows Server 2003 to allow Mac connections.
  • Speed up network between OS X and Windows XP - apparently IPv6 can get in the way sometimes.
  • Troubleshooting Windows Sharing (plus LOTS of background info)
  • Samba, an Open Source implementation currently bundled with most UNIX systems.

Miscellaneous:

Stopping Mac OS X from creating .DS_Store files in network volumes:

defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
