New Apple MacBooks at Oct. 14 event

Best take yet on all the idiocy surrounding the upcoming laptop refresh and all the fanboy hype about why Apple ought to be doing a netbook. I have a netbook and I’m still not convinced it’s a big enough market for Apple to address. It will, however, never be a market where Apple will compete on price – like I’ve always written, in laptops they aim for the 10% of folk that can yield 90% of the revenue (and not just over a single purchase). And I don’t buy into the $800 laptop being that “product transition” everyone’s been talking about, either – margins would be impacted, sure, but most people who peddle that rumor didn’t read the call transcripts or understand the context in which it was said.
