ActiveSync

is the original denomination for the synchronization protocol, which has since evolved into something that was originally called AirSync, and which is now the core of push-email offering.

Modern can be thought of (and is not completely unlike) WebDAV access to an server store (originally via a set of modified Web Access components), and has absolutely nothing to do with SyncML.

It is usually SSL-wrapped, supports keep-alive (or, more recently, SMS triggers for syncing), and has recently been licensed (directly or indirectly) by “traditional” handset vendors such as and SonyEricsson for inclusion in their business devices.
